Steven loves his parents, but in the beginning he takes a lot of his frustration over Jeffrey's illness and his loss of parental attention out on his mother. But by the end of the book he is friends with Renee and Annette is his girlfriend. Steven is in the eighth grade, has the hots for Renee Albert, and has no idea that his best friend Annette Watson has a crush on him. He has "mouse-brown cowlicky hair, glasses that are about an inch thick, and braces that look like tried to swallow a train wreck." 3.
